Two New Elective Classes : OCEN 4600 and OCEN 4601
Two new major elective courses (OCEN 4600 and OCEN 4601) had been approved and
the department intends to offer them every Spring semester starting Spring 2010.
OCEN 4600 Marine Conservation (3 credits) is a regular classroom based major elective course
OCEN 4601 Field Methods in Marine Research (3 credits) consists of Travel Learn component (travel cost extra) to Cayman Islands during the Spring Break for field work in addition to some class meetings and assignments before and after the field trip.
The prerequisite of OCEN 4600 and OCEN 4601 are 2 lab science classes, or permission of the instructor.
In particular,
for students with major in Geology (Option code 76201), Meteorology (76202) and General Option (76100) :
students can take either OCEN 4600 or OCEN 4601 or both (3 or 6 credits).
Either one or both classes can be used to fulfill the "Major Electives" requirement.
for students with second major in earth science (that is if your first major is in education or early childhood etc.):
credits for BOTH courses (OCEN 4600 and OCEN 4601, total 6 credits) can be used to substitute one of of the following courses :
This substitution is done on an individual basis for now and only for second major in earth science. Student who would like to use this combined OCEN 4600 and OCEN 4601 to substitute the above listed courses will need to stop by the department office to get a personalized letter for this substitution.
Please note that these two courses DOES NOT substitute OCEN 2400 Introduction to Oceanography.
OCEN 4601 requires approved petition for registration. Please contact Dr. Carrie Manfrino (cmanfrin@kean.edu or manfrino@reefresearch.org) for the required paperwork and petition.
