Geology News: Plate Movement in the South Pacific

Recently the islands in the South Pacific have been experiencing occurrences of major earthquakes and powerful aftershocks. To add to the devastation the earthquakes produced a tsunami that rushed the island of Samoa. In this region earthquakes are extremely common because of its location along an active plate boundary.

At 5:16 PM local time (6:16 AM EDT) a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred in Southern Sumatra, Indonesia.

Geology News: Drain the Ocean

Learn about the latest research in a new branch of aquatic geological study by watching National Geographic‘s brand new special “Drain the Ocean”. The program, including interviews with Charlie Paull, follows the research being done by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to map the Monterey Canyon (482.8 km long, 1.6 km deep) and their on-going technological development to improve attempts at mapping the nearly 3.78 x 107 km2 of uncharted ocean floor. Take a closer look at the terrain of the sea by watching “Drain the Ocean” on Sunday, August 9 at 9pm on NATGEO (channel 109).
